San Jose, Calif. --- The San Jose State women's soccer team couldn't have asked for a better way to end the nonconference season than with an eruption for five goals and a 5-1 victory over Portland State.

The scoring frenzy started early when Dorthe Hoppius took a pass from Carley McBeath and fired it past the keeper from the top of the box in the eighth minute.
Later in the 27th minute, Gabriela Herrera and Daria Manzano put together a nifty give-and-go combination which freed Herrera up for her first goal of the season.

Portland State's Breanna Chilton-Eddy cut the Spartans' lead to 2-1 with a header in the 43rd minute. But it only took Maricruz Chapa five minutes to answer right back and put the Spartans up 3-1.

Two late goals by Kristen Amarikwa (81) and Brittni Morgan (87) gave SJSU a 5-1 lead over the Vikings (2-6-0). Morgan's goal came just three minutes after she entered into the match as a sub.

The Spartans racked up six assists on the day. Hoppius, Herrera, Manzano, Alexis Venegas and Myia Wilkes all had helpers.
Five goals in a match is the most for San Jose State since an 8-0 win on the road at Howard in 2009. It was the first time since the 2006 season that SJSU scored five times at home.

San Jose State begins Mountain West play next week with a match on the road at UNLV on Friday, September 23, at 7:00 p.m.
