Volleyball Swept At Wyoming In MW Opener

Laramie, Wyo.-Spartan Summer Avery led all hitters with 10 kills, but the San José State volleyball team hit only .000 in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-23) loss at Wyoming in the opening match of the Mountain West season.

Giulia Gávio, back after missing the past two weeks with an injury, added eight kills and a team-best 10 digs. Nandyala Gama led the team with three blocks and had six kills. Breann Robinson had 29 assists and three digs.

Defensively, Julie Sam came off the bench to record nine digs, while Luiza Andrade had six digs.

The Spartans fell in the first two sets 25-14 and 25-14 and hit negative for the two sets. The two teams battled in the third set, with San José State leading 10-8 before the Cowgirls used a 10-3 run to take an 18-13 lead that was never relinquished. San José State got within one at 24-23, but Wyoming but the match away on the next serve.

For the match, San José State had 33 kills on 92 attempts with 33 errors. The team had just one service ace by Gávio, 33 digs and five blocks. The Cowgirls outblocked the Spartans 15-5.

San José State travels to Colorado State for a conference match on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. MDT/12 p.m. PDT.
