Walnut Creek, Calif.----- San José State was overmatched by #5-ranked Stanford in a 20-6 loss in the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Invitational men's water polo tournament.
The Cardinal (6-1) scored the first two goals of the match, led 4-1 after the first quarter, 7-2 at halftime and 14-4 after three quarters.
Finn Pardon was one of five Spartan goal scorers and led the team with two goals. Ivan Stefanovic, Ben Hauschild, Davor Koret and Marc Weber scored once for #18-ranked San José State (2-5).
Stanford's Sam Pfeil was the match's leading goal scorer with five.
Todd Palmer started in goal for San José State. He was credited with three saves in his one quarter of action. Cole Williams played the second and third quarters and stopped six Cardinal shots. Corey Valencia was the Spartans' goalkeeper in the fourth quarter.
In its second Mountain Pacific Invitational match, San José State plays Air Force at Northgate High in Walnut Creek starting at 9:20 a.m. The Spartans conclude second-day action facing either #8-UC Irvine or Pomona Pitzer in an afternoon contest at Northgate High.
