Fort Collins, Colo.-For the second consecutive match, a Spartan volleyball player led all hitters in kills, but on Saturday, San José State fell at Colorado State, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-21) in a Mountain West match in Moby Arena.
Giulia Gávio recorded a match-high 15 kills on 28 attempts and eight errors and was the only Spartan to record double-digit kills. She also had four digs and ace for the Spartans. Hana Tresnáková added nine kills and a dig.
Others contributing for the Spartans included Jamie Hirai with a team-best 12 digs, Luiza Andrade with 10 digs, five assists and a kill, Breann Robinson with 28 assists, four digs and two blocks, Latahevai Lousi with six kills, two digs and a block, Kaitlynn Zdroik with seven assists, and Nandyala Gama with two kills and two blocks.
The Spartans started the match on a very positive note, leading the defending MW champions for most of the first set. The Spartans forced the Rams to take two timeouts because of their play, leading 10-5 and 17-11. SJSU led 24-21, before Colorado State rallied to score five straight points and win the set 26-24.
Colorado State led the entire second set for the 25-18 win. The Spartans trailed 21-13 in the third set, before they used a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 21-17, and got as close as three points at 24-21 before the Rams won 25-21.
San José State returns to Spartan Gym for the first time in a month next week. The team opens the home portion of the MW schedule with matches against New Mexico on Thursday, September 29, at 7 p.m., and UNLV on Saturday, October 1, at 1 p.m. Admission is free to all matches at Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
