Minneapolis, Minn.----- Senior Marie Klocker and freshman Tamara Culibrk won their singles matches to claim championships at the Gopher Invitational women's tennis tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota.
Klocker defeated Iowa State's Samantha Budai, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 to win Flight A -- the most competitive of the six flights.
Playing in her first major college tournament, Culibrk defeated Preethu Kasilingam of North Dakota, 6-2, 6-1, for the championship in Flight D.
"This was a very good weekend for us. We wanted to play a lot of matches. We got to see teams we don't normally see. Everybody got to play four singles matches," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka, who praised his team's ability to win important points in a match.
"Marie's (championship) match was decided by the match tiebreaker. She played the big points successfully."
Overall, San Jose State's six players were 19-5 in singles and 12-9 in doubles over the four days. Klocker led the way with an overall record of 10-1, 4-0 in singles and 6-1 in doubles.
Sophomore Miyo Kobayashi and freshman Diane Flament missed out on their chance to join Klocker and Culibrk in the winner's circle. Iowa's Elise Van Heuvelen topped Kobayashi, 7-5, 6-2 in the Flight B championship. Adorabol Huckleby of Iowa defeated Flament, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 for the Flight C title.
Sybille Gauvain won her singles match over Minnesota's Tina Kreinis, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8) for third place in Flight A. Gaelle Rey lost the Flight B consolation final to Wisconsin's Kelsey Grambeau, 6-2, 6-1.
Gauvain and Klocker will play as singles and doubles entries in the Riviera ITA All-American in Southern California starting next weekend. The rest of the team will get ready for the Saint Mary's Invitational, October 7 through 9, in Moraga.
