SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San José State men's soccer team gave up a goal 34 seconds into overtime to Loyola Marymount's Adrien Perez and lost, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.

It was the second consecutive year that Perez scored the game winner against the Spartans, this time on a 20-yard left foot shot that found the back of the net.

It spoiled a fine performance by Spartans goal keeper Nedin Tucakovic, who dove to his right but could not reach the ball that skipped past his outstretched arms.

"I thought Nedin was brilliant today. I thought he really matured as a goalkeeper," said Spartans assistant coach Shane Carew.

Tucakovic saved seven shots in the game, with six of those coming in the second half, including a couple of acrobatic saves.

With game time temperature near 100 degrees, both SJSU and LMU battled for possession in the first half with the Spartans tallying seven shots compared to two for LMU. The teams headed to halftime, tied 0-0.

"We played well defensively in the first half," said Carew. "We had a freshman, Angel Farias, playing back there who played very well. Obviously playing Friday night and going double overtime in that game, it was a game of sheer grit to get through today but fatigue set in."

In the second half, the Lions outshot the Spartans, 9-6, but Tucakovic kept San José State in the game with his play.

In the second half, the best scoring opportunity for either side came in the 52nd minute when LMU's Alvaro Madrigal's free kick hit the underside of the cross bar, bouncing straight down, before Tucakovic punched it out.

The score remained 0-0 at the conclusion of regulation in near 100 degree temperature.

"We tried to make a lot of changes with the substitutions to freshen things up," said Carew. "But that's a good LMU side."

LMU is now 6-4-0 for the season and the Spartans dropped to 1-5-2.

The Spartans conclude their non-conference play at Santa Clara on Wednesday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. PT.
