Walnut Creek, Calif.----- Whittier College broke a 3-3 tie late in the first quarter and did not relinquish its lead the rest of the way in a 11-9 victory over San Jose State University on the final day of the Mountain Pacific Invitational men's water polo tournament.
The #18-ranked Spartans (2-8) was winless in the three-day, 16-team tournament that included 11 top-20 ranked teams including San Jose State.
Davor Koret and Cade Baldridge each scored twice for the Spartans. Alek Dendall, Akos Balazs, Ivan Stefanovic, Joshua Moon and Conor Shuey also scored.
Whittier's Massimilliano Mirachi led all players with six goals. His final goal of the match, converting on a power play with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter, gave the Poets (7-5) a 9-6 lead, its fourth three-goal advantage of the match.
San Jose State returns to action, Sunday, October 2, taking on California in a non-conference match at the Spieker Aquatic Complex on the Berkeley campus. Match time is 1:00 p.m. The Golden Bears finished second at the Mountain Pacific Invitational losing to UCLA, 10-7, in the championship match.
