Minneapolis, Minn.----- All six San Jose State University players won their singles matches in straight sets and four advanced to the championship final in their flight on the third day of the Gopher Invitational women's tennis tournament.
Senior Marie Klocker, sophomore Miyo Kobayashi and freshmen Diane Flament and Tamara Culibrk will play in a championship final singles flight on September 25.
Klocker was the only Spartan that needed a tiebreaker to claim a straight set victory with her 7-3 score to defeat Minnesota's Tina Kreinis, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Her win in the afternoon pushed her into fourth place on the school's career win list with 118.
Junior Sybille Gauvain's win over Ani Gogvadze (Eastern Michigan), 6-1, 6-2 puts her in a fifth-place match on September 25. Senior Gaelle Rey will play for a consolation championship after topping Diana Tokar of Marquette, 6-1, 6-2.
The Spartans also picked up two more doubles wins in the morning portion of the day's action. Klocker and Gauvain, ranked #47 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings, split their two matches. Rey teamed with Culibrk to knock off Iowa State's Margarita Timakova & Karen Alvarez, 6-1.
