SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team lost, 1-0, in double overtime against cross town rival Santa Clara to close out its non-conference schedule on Wednesday night.

Playing in their third match in six days, and ahead of the conference opening match on Friday, September 30, the Spartans substituted heavily in the first half. Only goal keeper Nedin Tucakovic and defenseman, Tanner Akol, making his Spartan debut, played the entire first half.

"All preparation is for Friday's conference opener with a tough weekend going to Grand Canyon and UNLV. We viewed today's game as a warm-up to those games, hence the number of substitutions you saw throughout the game," said Spartans assistant coach Shane Carew. "We used our entire squad tonight and every one of them played brilliantly. We are very proud of every single one of them on the roster."

Given the number of substitutions, the Spartans could not get into rhythm offensively, unable to get a shot off in the first half compared to seven shots for the Broncos. Both teams headed to the locker rooms tied, 0-0, at the half.

"Santa Clara is very well coached and organized. They are tough to break them down," said Carew.

The Spartans finally got off a shot in the 63rd minute when Ralph Stas took one just outside the 18.

SJSU's best scoring opportunity came in the 80th minute when Alex Alcarez made the diagonal pass from the left corner of the box to Lomeli. Lomeli had a good look but his shot missed wide from 12-yards out.

The Spartans outshot the Broncos 3-2 in the second half but the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, much of the play was on Spartans half of the field with Broncos on the attack. With eight seconds remaining in the first overtime, SJSU's Darren Sinclair picked up his second yellow card of the evening.

"When we went down to 10 men, we brought in a lot of our starters in to go on to win the game," said Carew.

However, off a quick start at midfield, Santa Clara's Carlos Delgadillo passed it to Satoshi Chaffin across the field, who dribbled past a falling Spartan defender to slip the ball past Tucakovic for the game winner.

The Spartans finished their non-conference schedule with a record of 1-6-2 and the Broncos improved to 5-3-0.

SJSU open conference play on Friday, September 30 when they take on Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.
