Gávio Leads Volleyball To 1-1 Record Saturday At Wolverine Invitational

Orem, Utah-- Giulia Gávio recorded two double-doubles on Saturday as the San José State volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Wolverine Invitational, defeating North Texas 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 28-26) but falling to host Utah Valley 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 25-21) in the final match of the tournament.

Gávio recorded a double-double in all three matches of the tournament. On Saturday, she had 15 kills and 17 digs against North Texas and 23 kills and 14 digs versus Utah Valley. For the weekend, Gávio averaged 5.38 kills and 3.62 digs per set and was named to the Wolverine Invitational All-Tournament team.

Luiza Andrade had another good weekend statistically digging the ball. She recorded a career-best 30 digs against Utah Valley and is just the fourth Spartan to record 30 digs in a match (Jessie Shull, Kristal Tsukano, Yavianliz Rosado) and the 13th Spartan in school history to record 30 or more digs in a match. Andrade also added 22 digs in the win over North Texas.

Three Spartans recorded double-digit kills in the four-set loss to Utah Valley. Gávio led the team with 23 kills, followed by Latahevai Lousi with 14 and Summer Avery with 10. Gávio hit a team-best .404 for the match (23-4-47).

Breann Robinson recorded her first double-double of the season with 50 assists and 11 digs. Andrade led the team with 30 digs, and Gávio added 14 for her third double-double of the weekend. Nandyala Gama recorded a team-best six blocks to go with eight kills and five digs.

The Spartans hit just .201 for the match and were outblocked 14-6. The team recorded five service aces (Gávio 2, Hana Tresnáková 2).

Earlier in the day, San José State (4-2) defeated North Texas 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 28-26). Three Spartans against recorded double-figure kills - Gávio with 15 and Avery and Thelma Grétarsdottir with 12 a piece. Andrade again led the team with 22 digs. The Spartans had eight service aces, as Gávio had career-high five, followed by Robinson with two and Jamie Hirai with one.

San José State recorded 14 blocks during the match, led by Thaliana Grajeda (0-6) and Robinson (1-5) with six blocks each. Gama recorded five block assists, while Grétarsdottir had four.

Next weekend, San José State plays three matches at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup hosted by the University of Houston. The Spartans face Louisiana Monroe and Houston on Friday and Houston Baptist on Saturday.
