PORTLAND, Ore. - The San José State University men's soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime against the University of Portland on a diving header by Pilots' Geoffrey Dunn off a set piece in the 97th minute.

The set piece was the result of a yellow card foul by the Spartans outside the top right corner of the 18. Up until that time, the Spartans dominated overtime play carrying the momentum it generated from the second half. The Spartans kept the ball exclusively in Portland's third of the field until Portland's Jackson Jellah took possession of a goal kick at midfield before being tripped outside the 18.

"We lost a little discipline on the set piece," said Spartans head coach Simon Tobin, where Dunn ran inside the six-yard box untouched to head the ball cleanly past Spartans goalkeeper, Nedin Tucakovic.

"We were all over them in the second half and overtime as I thought we'd win," said Tobin. "We sat back and gave ground in the first half but we played higher and assertive in the second half."

While the Spartans were outshot 19-8 for the game, including 12-2 in the first half, Spartan senior Jonathan Colunga and crew began to control the midfield in the second half.

With San José State down 1-0 late in the second half, defenseman Kyle O'Mahoney kicked in Leonardo Silva's corner kick inside the 6-yard box for the equalizer. It was the second career goal for the senior from England.

"O'Mahoney had the goal but defensively, he and Scott Buskey were superb. They were strong and played fantastic," said Tobin.

Portland's goal in the first half came off a free kick in the 43rd minute from 24 yards out. Portland's Erik Edwardson cleared the wall and placed the ball where only the post could touch it before hitting the net.

The Spartans dropped its record to 1-2-1, all against non-conference opponents. The Pilots won its third consecutive match and improved to 3-1-0.

Next up, the Spartans play against defending national champion Stanford on Saturday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
