MALIBU, Calif. â€" San Jose State University women's tennis senior Marie Klocker won both of her matches at Pepperdine University on the first day of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships and made Spartan history in the process. Her first win on the day, a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Magdalena Stencil of Wyoming was the first SJSU win in the history of the championships.
Klocker went on to defeat #98 Laura Gulbe of Pepperdine, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in her second match avenging last year's 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 loss to Gulbe.
Klocker will face Ryann Foster of LSU on October 2 at 12:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the qualifying singles draw.
"Although Marie fell behind early in her second match, she was able to refocus, come back and beat an opponent playing on her home court," said SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka. "She has a tough match tomorrow in a 'winner take all' situation."
Junior Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State upset #102 Tina Bokhua of Texas A&M, 6-4, 6-3, before falling in a hard fought match to #89 Josie Kuhlman of Florida, 6-2, 7-5. "In her first match, Sybille came out and played a complete match against a very strong opponent who is a top-three player on her team," said Skorupka. "She ran into a tough matchup later in the afternoon and played very well, but wasn't able to get the tiebreaker."
Gauvain and Klocker will also compete as a doubles team in the qualifying draw starting on Tuesday, October 4.
