Men's Soccer Loses, 4-1, Against Incarnate Word

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San José State men's soccer team got off to a quick start, scoring first in the ninth minute, but gave up four unanswered goals and lost, 4-1, to Incarnate Word on Sunday afternoon inside CEFCU Stadium.

The Spartans scored when Jonathan Colunga stole the ball from the Cardinals defender 40-yards out in the middle of the field, dribbled 25-yards in the open before sliding his shot past the UIW goalkeeper, beating him in a one-on-one matchup. It was Colunga's second goal of the season.

Two minutes later, UIW answered back when Miguel Ojeda headed in the ball off a corner kick to tie the match at 1-1.

The Cardinals took the lead in the 16th minute when UIW's leading point man, Ben Conway dribbled inside the box and delivered a left foot cross that Wouter Peters headed in from the six.

SJSU appeared to tie the match up in the 24th minute when forward Jeremy Romero's header found the back of the net, off a beautiful curling pass from Colunga over the UIW defense, however, the Spartans were called for an offsides.

After the three goal flurry in a seven minute span, the score would remain, 2-1, going into the intermission.

San José State had a golden opportunity to tie the match in the second half when Rory Knibbs' centering pass barely missed the outstretched foot of Romero inside the six.

UIW put the match away in the 83rd minute on Ben Conway's goal and added another goal a minute later for the final margin of victory. UIW improved its record to 4-6-2, 2-2-1 WAC. SJSU is now 2-11-2, 1-3-1.

Next up for the Spartans, a home match against Utah Valley on Sunday, October 23 at 12 noon (PT).
