HOME FINALE COMING UP FOR SJSU WOMEN'S SOCCERSan José State plays on the road at Air Force on Friday before returning home for the final time in 2016 for a match against Colorado College. The Spartans hope to carry momentum from two wins last week into the thin air of Colorado Springs, Colo., to face the Falcons. SJSU OFFENSE RISES TO THE TOPDuring Mountain West play San José State leads the league in points (54), goals per game (2.25), total assists (18) and assists per game (2.25). UNLV's 18 total goals is tied with San José State at the top. The Spartans accumulated 22 points last week with seven goals and eight assists. The SJSU offense hasn't looked back from a 5-0 win over Portland State in the nonconference finale. The 0-0 tie at Boise State has been the only match since without a goal.KEEP CONNECTINGThe Spartans tallied eight assists on seven goals last week in wins over Wyoming and Colorado State. Alyssa Bertuleit registered two helpers in the win over Colorado State. Didi Hoppius and Alexis Venegas were on both the giving and receiving end of an assist during the week. Head coach Lauren Hanson credited the team's aggressive mentality for the bevy of pass connections leading to goals.NEW SCORING TRENDHeading into last week the Spartans had scored a goal within the first 25 minutes of six out of the previous seven matches. But that changed when all seven goals scored against Wyoming and Colorado State came in the second half. It was a comeback 3-1 win against Wyoming and then after a scoreless first 45 minutes against Colorado State, SJSU came out and scored four second half goals.LEADERS STEPPING UPDorthe Hoppius and Alexis Venegas have been the offensive leaders for SJSU all year long. That didn't change a bit last week when the two combined for 10 points with two goals and an assist a piece. The effort from the leaders helped SJSU get two wins and six crucial points in the Mountain West table.MOUNTAIN WEST LANDSCAPESan José State is in third place with 16 points in the Mountain West table. The top two teams, UNLV and San Diego State, have only one loss in league play - at the hands of the Spartans. The top six teams at the end of the regular season make it into the MW Championship Tournament with the first and second seeds earning a bye. Depending on Friday's results from around the league, the Spartans could have a chance to punch a ticket to the tournament on Sunday against Colorado College.HOPPIUS HEADING TO THE U-20 WORLD CUPSan José State junior forward Dorthe Hoppius is heading to the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Papau New Guinea this November as a member of her native German Women's National Team. Hoppius will be the first active women's soccer student-athlete to represent her country at any FIFA World Cup. The FIFA U-20 World Cup begins November 13.SUNDAY IS SENIOR DAYBe sure and show up early for Sunday's match as the program will honor nine seniors lacing up for the final time at home. Being the second game of a men's and women's doubleheader, the match will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men's game and no earlier than 2:30 p.m. (PT).
