BERKELEY, Calif. -- The San José State men's water polo team was defeated by #2-ranked California 16-9 in a non-conference match at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Berkeley.

"I'm really proud of how our young guys battled throughout the whole game," said San José State head coach Bruce Watson. "Cal is the number two team in the country and our guys fought them in every phase."

Spartan freshman Finn Pardon opened the scoring at 7:07 in the first quarter. The Bears (13-1) then went on a 5-0 scoring run from which the Spartans (2-9) weren't able to recover. Pardon and sophomore Zachary Scudder led SJSU with two goals each.

San José State returns to action on Sunday, October 9 in a non-conference match against Stanford at the Avery Aquatic Center on Stanford's campus at 1 p.m.
