SARATOGA, Calif. -- San José State took #19-UC Irvine down to the wire in a Golden Coast Conference match under the lights at West Valley College, but fell just short.
"That was one of the better games we played this season," said SJSU head coach Bruce Watson. "It shows our young guys are growing, they're really starting to figure things out."
The Spartans (4-12, 0-2) were led by yet another strong performance by freshman Finn Pardon who put away three goals. Pardon now has nine goals in his last three games.
The Anteaters (9-8, 1-1) went ahead on Ryan Warde's goal, his first of four, at 7:27 in the first period and didn't trail the rest of the way although they could never quite pull away.
The Spartans grabbed the momentum on a Pardon goal off a Davor Koret steal that tied the score at seven with 1:44 left in the third period. However, SJSU went on to give up two shorthanded goals and found themselves down 9-7.
"We had a shot to win the game," said Watson. "But that's our youth, we are learning how to win as a group. We have to learn how to finish. I'm excited, we have a really competitive group."
The Spartans were able to claw their way back to a 10-9 score and had a chance to force the game into overtime after they drew an exclusion on UCI with 18 seconds left. The Spartans' shot sailed just over the cage and UCI was able to escape West Valley College with the win.
San José State has a quick turnaround and will play three games tomorrow, Saturday, October 22, in the Rodeo Tournament. Their first game is at 9:00 a.m. against Navy. They also play #14-George Washington at 1:00 p.m. and #10-Brown at 5:00 p.m.
