Gauvain Wins Two More Singles Matches At ITA NW Regional Championships

Oct. 22, 2016

Stanford, Calif.----- San Jose State University junior Sybille Gauvain picked up her second win over a seeded singles player in two days when she defeated #9-seed Ayssa Tobita, 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker), 6-4, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northwest Regional Championships.

Gauvain will face #8-seed Melissa Lord of Stanford in a Sunday, October 23, 12:00 p.m. match in the quarterfinal round of the championship singles bracket. The third-year Spartan from Frejus, France started the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Aneta Miksovska of Washington State.

"I was able to put the ball in the court every time. I was mentally prepared and physically prepared. Normally my backhand is my best shot, but in this tournament, it's my forehand," said Gauvain who worked specifically on improving her forehand game in practice before the tournament. "I've tried to put the ball in the court, be aggressive and it's worked.

"My serve is better, too. I have a strong second serve. So, I am able to serve `flat' first serves and I can win a lot of points with it," added Gauvain, who did not double fault in her win over Miksovska.

"It was great to get two doubles and advance them to tomorrow (Sunday, October 23). Marine (Dans) and Gaelle (Rey) were up 6-3, but had to battle back and got off to a good start in the tiebreaker. Tamara (Culibrk) and Miyo (Kobayashi) played very solid in their doubles win," said a pleased San Jose State women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka. "Obviously, Sybille served `big' today when it mattered and she came out victorious in both her matches."

Dans and Rey topped the Pacific pair of Cristina Saenz DeBuruaga and Mayan Sela, 8-7 (4). Culibrk and Kobayashi had an easier time in their win over Portland State's Tracy Dong and Sally Partington, 8-3.

Dans and Kobayashi also picked up a consolation singles bracket win.

For the tournament, San Jose State is 11-5 in singles matches and 4-0 in doubles.

The third day (October 23) of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships start at 10:00 a.m. with third round doubles action.
