San Jose State Swimming Finishes Second At Pacific Invitational

Stockton, Calif.----- San Jose State University had first place finishes in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly races and won the 400 medley and 200 freestyle relay races on the final day of the Pacific Invitational women's swimming meet to finish second out of five teams.

Sophomores Marley Maluafiti won the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.09 and Brenna Bushey placed first in the 100 fly in 55.23. Maluafiti also tied with teammate Lani Auva'a for fourth in the 100 fly at 57.40.

The Spartans finished with 676 points just ahead of Mountain West members Fresno State at 653 and Air Force at 617. Host Pacific was the team champion with 706. Fresno Pacific was fifth in the five-team invitational at 434.

"We had a very solid performance today. I am especially pleased with our relays and the wins by Brenna (Bushey), Marley (Maluafiti) and Coco (Humel in the 100 back Friday night)," said San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins.

"It was great to see that we improved in several areas we've been focusing on and have also identified some items that we need to improve moving into the A3 Invite next month."

The Spartans' "A" relay teams posted winning times of 3:50.69 in the 400 medley and 1:35.93 in the 200 free to give San Jose State five first-place finishes in the 16 contested events. Pacific matched the Spartans with five first-place finishes, two of which were the 200 medley and 400 free relays on October 21. Fresno State had three first-place finishes, Air Force, two, and Fresno Pacific, one.

San Jose State returns to action, Thursday, November 17, for the three-night A3 Invitational in Monterey Park, Calif.
