Stockton, Calif.----- Junior Colleen Humel won the 100 backstroke, placed second in the 200 backstroke and was part of two San Jose State University second-place relay teas leading the Spartans to a first-place start at the Pacific Invitational women's swimming meet.
Humel, from Chicopee, Mass., had times of 56.47 in the 100 back and 2:02.83 in the 200 back. Humel also was a part of 200 medley relay team. She swam the first legs of the 200 medley relay followed by Jenner Johnson, Brenna Bushey and Kimberlee Giggey and the 400 free relay that included Taylor Solorio, Gabby Heng, and Taylor Lehr.
The Spartans have a team score of 340. Pacific and Air Force are close to San Jose State with totals of 218 and 312, respectively. Fresno State at 267, and Host Pacific at 228 round out the team scoring.
Spartans' head coach Sage Hopkins was pleased with the start.
"We had a very solid performance this evening. The team has gotten into a solid rhythm in practice and it is great to see so much improvement over the last two weeks."
Solorio and Jenner Johnson gave the Spartans a three-four finish in the 100 breast, the Spartans best event of the night. Four San Jose State swimmers scored points in the event. Solorio also was fifth in the 50 free.
