STANFORD, Calif. - San José State's women tennis team had a big day at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Stanford, Calif.
Both of the Spartans doubles teams won their first matches of the championships and will compete in the round of 32 on Saturday, October 22.
Marine Dans and Gaelle Rey defeated Washington's Kenadi A. Hance and Katarina Kopcalic, 8-5. Dans and Rey face Pacific'sCristina Saenz De Buruaga and Mayan Sela at 9:00 a.m.
Tamara Culibrk and Miyo Kobayashi downed Portland's Jelena Lazarevic and Kara G. Okazaki, 8-2. Culibrk and Kobayashi take on Portland State's Tracy Dong and Sally Partington at 10:00 a.m.
In singles play, Sybille Gauvain and Tamara Culibrk turned in gems for the Spartans. Gauvain defeated Jaiyu Mu of San Francisco in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, before defeating the number 4 seed in the tournament, Cal's Denise Starr, 6-2, 6-2. Starr is also ranked #62 in the nation. Gauvain takes on Washington State's Aneta Miksovska.
Culibrk defeated Portland State's Siena Peri 6-3, 6-4. She went on to take down Seattle's Madison Maloney, 6-3, 6-1. Culibrk joins Gauvain in the round of 32 and looks to continue her streak against Washington's Alexis Prokopuik at 10:00 a.m.
