Stanford, Calif.----- For the first time in school history, San Jose State University will have two entries in the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Northwest Regional Championships semifinal rounds when fourth-day action begins Monday, October 24, at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
Sybille Gauvain, the Spartans' #1-singles player the last two seasons, will face University of California's Karla Popovic in one semifinal singles match starting at 10:30 a.m. Gauvain advanced to the semis with her third win over a seeded player in the tournament. She defeated #8-seed Melissa Lord of Stanford, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, in a Sunday quarterfinal match.
"Sybille capitalized on the Stanford player's unforced errors in the third set. It was a great win for her," said San Jose State University women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka.
"Nothing was on super, super well for her, but, in the end, she was more consistent (than her opponent)."
At 1:00 p.m., San Jose State's doubles tandem of freshman Tamara Culibrk and sophomore Miyo Kobayashi faces the Stanford pair of Caroline Lampi and Kimberly Yee. Culibrk and Kobayashi won twice on October 23 defeating the Saint Mary's pair of Emma Critser and Parminder Kaur, 8-6, and the University of San Francisco duo of Emily Maxfield and Gen McCloskey, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.
"They took care of business in the first match (against Critser and Kaur). In the second match, they were down 5-4 and won four straight games to win, 8-5. They won the big points -- three deuce games and that proved to be the difference maker today," Skorupka said about Culibrk and Kobayashi pair
A second Spartans doubles team of Marine Dans and Gaelle Rey lost to Cal's Olivia Hauger and Popovic in another round of 16 championship bracket match on a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4). Hauger and Popovic were the seventh-seeded doubles team in the tournament.
Rey was a fourth San Jose State winner with a singles victory in Sunday's consolation bracket.
