SARATOGA, Calif. -- The San José State men's water polo team couldn't keep up with #18-St. Francis Brooklyn on the second day of the Rodeo Tournament at West Valley College, but were able to bounce back in the afternoon to take down Johns Hopkins, 10-6.

"(St. Francis Brooklyn) was a good team," said SJSU head coach Bruce Watson. "We were deficient with our power plays and that cost us the game."

San José State had 14 power plays but was only able to convert one of those chances in their 8-4 loss to the Terriers (10-9).

Freshman Marc Weber of the Spartans (7-14) opened the scoring at 3:47 in the first period and scored his second goal just over a minute later to give SJSU an early 2-1 lead. St. Francis then went on a 5-1 run to make the score 5-3 just after halftime. Weber completed his hat trick at 1:36 in the third period to bring the Spartans within one but St. Francis scored three unanswered goals to close out the game, 8-4.

"Our youth showed in our first game," said Watson. "But the defense is great. TJ Palmer is playing super. We're growing."

In the second game of the day, and fifth in two days, the Spartans gave up the first goal against Johns Hopkins. However, that would be the last goal the Blue Jays (3-10) would score until a Bret Pinsker goal at 2:37 in the third period. Freshman Finn Pardon put SJSU up 2-1 with back-to-back first period goals. Those goals were the start of a 10-0 run by the Spartans.

"The guys bounced back for the second game," said Watson. "We worked on some different things and we got to play a lot of guys. The guys got a nice win."

The Spartans won three out of five games on the weekend and will take on #8-Pepperdine next.

That match is a home match for the Spartans and takes place this Friday, October 28 under the lights at West Valley College at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
