Las Vegas, Nev.- Nandyala Gama led the San José State volleyball team with nine kills and five blocks, but the Spartans fell at UNLV 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-13) Thursday night in a Mountain West match at the Cox Pavilion.
Thelma Grétarsdottir had seven kills and three blocks, followed by Giulia Gávio with six kills, Summer Avery at five and Thaliana Grajeda with four.
The Spartans hit just .073 for the match and no player hit above .200 for the match. The team was outblocked 12-6, and recorded only one service ace by Gama.
Luiza Andrade led the team with 18 digs, followed by Gávio and Jamie Hirai with nine digs each. Breann Robinson recorded 26 assists and six digs.
San José State had an early lead in set one, 4-2, and had an 8-7 lead before UNLV used a 7-1 run to open up a 14-9 lead. The Spartans got as close as 15-14 but could not take back the lead and lost the set 25-20.
The team showed fight in the second set. Despite trailing 18-13, the Spartans slowly chipped away at the Rebel lead and tied the set at 23-23 and 24-24 before UNLV won 26-24.
In the third set, UNLV led from first serve and stormed out to a 7-2 lead before winning 25-13.
The Spartans look for their first road MW win this Saturday when the team plays at New Mexico. First serve is set for 12 p.m. MDT/11 a.m. PDT.
