Albuquerque, N.M.- Nandyala Gama was a bright blocking star for the San José State volleyball team as the Spartans were swept at New Mexico, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20), Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West match in Albuquerque, N.M.
Gama recorded three block assists during the match to increase her season total to 106 block assists and move onto the San José State single season block assists list. She is tied for 10th with former Spartan greats Joslynn Gallop (1998) and Stephanie Pascucci (2002).
Gama is the first player to enter the top-10 in block assists since the 2002 season when Pasccuci and Liz Hudson each entered the list. Gama needs only two more block assists to tie Barbara Higgins for ninth, four for eighth with Tanya Kamau and five for seventh with Melissa Myers. The school record is 134, set by Hudson during the 2001 season.
The Spartan volleyball team's poor hitting on the road continued on Saturday as San José State hit only .055. No Spartan player hit better than .200 for the match. Latahevai Lousi led the team in kills with seven and hit .200 for the match (7-2-30). Thaliana Grajeda was the only other San José State player to hit a positive number at .136, with six kills on 22 attempts and three errors.
In contrast, New Mexico hit .204 as team for the match, led by Devanne Sours who led all hitters with 17 kills and hit .314 for the match (17-6-35).
