SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team nearly tied the match in the final minute when Jeremy Romero placed his header on goal, but a diving stop by Seattle University goal keeper Jordan Hadden preserved the 2-1 lead and eventually the win for the Redhawks. SJSU's record dropped to 1-9-2 overall and 0-2-1 in WAC play. Seattle upped its record to 7-4-0 including 3-0-0 in the WAC.
"Seattle is a very good team. They were brilliant last year and maybe stronger in some departments this year," said Spartans head coach Simon Tobin referring to the Redhawks team that made the sweet 16 in last year's NCAA tournament.
"When we are at home, we have the capability to beat them and we played well in patches but not well enough," said Tobin.
For the 11th consecutive game, the opposing team got on the scoreboard first when Seattle's David Olsen notched a goal in the 17th minute. Olsen took advantage of a corner kick that the Spartans failed to clear, settling the ball and striking a line drive shot past the diving Spartan goalkeeper, Nedin Tucakovic.
The score remained, 1-0, going into the half.
Three minutes into the second half, the Spartans were given a gift goal when Redhawks goalkeeper Jordan Hadden misplayed a ball. A Seattle defender sent back a pass that Hadden whiffed on, finding the back of the net. The own goal tied the game at, 1-1.
In the 56th minute, Seattle reclaimed the lead when Olsen delivered a cross into the box for Jeff Rose, who headed it into the net from a couple of yards out to put the Redhawks up, 2-1.
For the match, Seattle outshot San José State, 13-8, with an 8-3 advantage on shots on goal.
The Spartans play at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
"I feel it's a must win game for us against CSU Bakersfield. I think 15 points gets you in the WAC Tournament and we have one point so far. So in order to get to 15 points, we needed to win all five home games. With today's result, that's one home game we've lost which is not unreasonable because Seattle is very good. But that means, you have to go on the road and win one and you have to win the remaining four home games. But we're starting to run out of games, we have to start putting points on the table," said Tobin.
