Oct. 7, 2016

The San Jose State University women's swimming and diving team opens its 2016-17 season at the Chick-fil-A Invitational at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.

The meet begins Friday, October 7, at 11:00 a.m. with five events before noon and six events in the afternoon and concludes with seven events on Saturday, October 8, starting at 10:00 a.m.

The Spartans are one of six teams in the meet. CSU Bakersfield, Boise State, Nevada, San Diego State and host Fresno State are joining San Jose State.

There will be 17 swimming events in the two-day meet.

Head coach Sage Hopkins has 25 swimmers, 14 them freshmen. Butterfly specialist Brenna Bushey and backstroker Colleen Humel are the top two returning Spartans. Both swam in their specialty events at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team trials in Omaha, Neb.

The last time San Jose State competed in this season-opening meet was in 2014. The Spartans finished first out of three teams. Bushey had a terrific college debut winning the 100 fly, 100 back and 50 and 100 freestyles.
