MORAGA, Calif. - The San José State women's tennis team started strong on the first day of the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational with four doubles wins. The Spartans also went 2-1 in singles action.
"I was pleased with the doubles teams today," said SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka. "Both teams were serving well and that got them off to a good start."
Senior Marine Dans and sophomore Miyo Kobayashi took out Susanne Boyden and Ilana Oleynik of Cal Poly, 8-6, before defeating Cal's duo of Alexis Nelson and Maria Smith 8-5 in the "A" bracket. On Saturday, they will take on Jana McCord and Jacqueline Pelletier of Saint Mary's, who are seeded #2 in the bracket, in a quarterfinals match.
In the "B" bracket, freshmen Tamara Culibrk and Diane Flament posted an 8-3 victory against Sacramento State's Louisa Brunetti and Sofia Gulnova. They went on to defeat Hanna Borjeson and Anna Sokiran of San Francisco 8-5 to reach the quarterfinals of the "B" Bracket.
In singles action, Kobayashi defeated Stephanie Lin of Cal, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 32 in the "A" bracket. Also in the "A" bracket, Dans lost to Jessie Lee of UC Davis, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
In the "B" bracket singles, Flament advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-2, 7-5 win against Santa Clara's Caraline Patterson. Culibrk, seeded #3 in the bracket, received a bye.
Doubles action gets underway Saturday, October 8, at 9:00 a.m. Singles matches start at 10:30 a.m.
"We have six singles matches tomorrow," said Skorupka. "The competition will be much stronger."
