BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - In a recurring theme for the San José State men's soccer team this season, the Spartans allowed the opponent to score first, before making a comeback to tie the game, only to give up the go ahead goal to lose the match.

On Saturday evening, it happened against the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners, losing 2-1.

San José State have now lost 10 of its last 11 matches and dropped its record to 1-10-2, 0-3-1 WAC. CSU Bakersfield picked up its first conference win and improved its record to 3-9-0, 1-3-0 WAC.

As the Spartans have done so in each of the 11 previous games, the Spartans allowed the opposing team to score the first goal of the match. In the 6th minute, CSU Bakersfield scored on a long ball that the Spartans failed to draw an offsides on, leaving the CSU Bakersfield player one-on-one with Spartans goalkeeper Nedin Tucakovic. Robin Lindahl of CSU Bakersfield beat Tucakovic low to go up, 1-0.

In the 23rd minute, SJSU had a golden opportunity to tie the score when forward Rory Knibbs took a pass 12-yards out with only the goalkeeper infront, but his shot sailed high.

Three minutes later, the Spartans had another opportunity when Carlos Valdovinos sent a low centering ball that Zach Penner just missed getting his foot on. However, Penner would make the most of a similar opportunity in the second half.

At the intermission CSUB led, 1-0, despite the Spartans holding a 12-7 advantage in shots.

Eight minutes into the second half, Penner got his second chance inside the box when defenseman Kyle O'Mahoney sent a ball from the left side. Penner's initial shot was blocked by the Roadrunners goalkeeper but Penner kept with the ball to find the back of the net to tie the match at one apiece. It was Penner's second goal of the season.

In the 63rd minute, CSU Bakersfield had an opportunity to re-take the lead but a header off a corner hit the cross bar.

Ten minutes later in the 73rd minute, CSU Bakersfield would reclaim the lead on a 24 yard shot by Niklas Koerber which was tucked to the lower right side of the goal.

SJSU's best chance to tie the game came a few minutes later when Knibbs' shot inside the six off a goalkeeper save was blocked by the defender.

The Spartans outshot the Roadrunners 18-11 for the game including 10-4 advantage on shots on goal.

In the 12 games the Spartans have allowed the first goal to the opponent, they have come back to tie the score in seven of them but are only 1-5-1 in those matches.

The Spartans look to break their losing streak when they play three consecutive home matches, starting with Friday, October 14th matchup with Houston Baptist at 2:30 p.m. PT
