Tempe, Ariz. - The San José State women's basketball team endured a 16-0 run in the opening five minutes of the game by the #18/16 Arizona State Sun Devils and never recovered in an 82-37 defeat on Sunday afternoon in Wells Fargo Arena.

"I thought we grew in this game and played better than we had on Friday," head coach Jamie Craighead said. "This was a superior opponent and we knew that going in, but we made some adjustments and played better. (Arizona State) is probably the best team we will face on our non-conference schedule. We didn't back down: we kept on fighting. We dug ourselves a really big whole in the first quarter, but really played well in the second and fourth quarters."

The Spartans (0-2) got good looks on the offensive end, but missed their first eight shots and didn't knock one down until a Myzhanique Ladd layup with 4:45 to go in the first period. The Sun Devils (2-0) went on to hit 11-of-15 shots in the quarter (73 percent) and led 29-7 after 10 minutes.

Each team turned the ball over seven times in the first period, but Arizona State turned the SJSU mistakes into 11 points going the other way while the Spartans weren't able to take advantage of the ASU miscues

In the second quarter, Coach Craighead had her team switch to a zone defense and the Spartans responded. They slowed the ASU offense and forced them into shooting from the outside. The Sun Devils missed seven threes in a row, but the San Jose State offense continued to struggle.

Dezz Ramos, who led the team with nine points, missed her first six shots from the floor, but broke the spell with a jumper with 2:07 to play before the half. The SJSU defense held the Sun Devils to 25 percent shooting in the quarter while hitting 31 percent themselves, but couldn't reduce the deficit. The teams went to the locker room with ASU up 44-21.

"We calmed down when we broke their press and put a high-ball screen in place, which took pressure of our wings to get open," Craighead said.

Any hope of getting back into the game evaporated with a 14-0 Arizona State run early in the third quarter. They would go on to shoot 75 percent in the quarter, making 9-of-12 shots, and pushed their advantage to 41 points, 71-30, heading into the fourth en route to an 82-37 victory.

The 37 points in the game are the fewest for the program since a 54-29 loss at New Mexico State in the 2010-11 season, and the 45-point margin of defeat is the largest since a 41-point loss, 101-60, at Colorado State in 2013-14.

"Give them credit, they did whatever they wanted to do on offense," Craighead added, "but as I said we battled and got better with our zone defensive scheme. If we continue to play as hard as we did and keep battling through adversity then we'll get better and that is what this part of our schedule is about."

The Spartans return to the friendly confines of The Event Center next week for back-to-back home games. SJSU makes is home debut on Friday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. against Pacific and is right back on Walt McPherson Court two days later against cross-town rival Santa Clara. The tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
