San Jose, Calif.----- San José State forward Brandon Clarke scored a career and game-high 28 points and led all players with 10 rebounds, but the University of Portland remained unbeaten in a 79-66 non-conference men's basketball win over the Spartans.
Clarke scored 17 points in the first half as San Jose State (1-1) went into halftime with a 35-32 lead. The Spartans led, 38-33, before the Pilots (2-0) went on a 13-0 run for a 46-38 advantage. San José State, which made only one field goal in the first 8:28 in the second half got no closer than a three-point deficit, 54-51 with 9:04 remaining after a Terrell Brown 3-point basket.
Forward Gabe Taylor led the Pilots in scoring with career-highs of 24 points and nine rebounds. Guard Alec Wintering added 20 points. Four of the five Portland starters finished in double figure scoring. Guard Jazz Johnson had 16 and forward Jarrel Marshall, 11.
Portland converted 50.0 percent of its field goals for the game. The Pilots were 17-of-28 from the field in second half. San José State finished with a 36.2 field goal percentage.
Clarke, who also matched a career-high five blocked shots, was the only San José State player in double-figure scoring. Guard Isaiah Nichols was credited with 10 assists, but was scoreless on four field goal attempts.
