Ramos Hits Career-High but Spartans Fall In Overtime

Nov. 18, 2016

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - Dezz Ramos shot 50 percent from the floor including 67 percent from beyond the arc for a career-high 38 points, which tied an Event Center record for a Spartan, but the San José State women's basketball team fell 99-96 in overtime to the Pacific Tigers on Friday night.

Ramos, who hit 12-of-24 from the floor and 6-of-9 from three-point range equaled Danada Smith's Event Center scoring record which was set against Long Island on December 30, 2000. In addition, the Spartans made 15 threes which eclipsed the program's previous Event Center record of 14. They hit 14 threes in a game in the Event Center twice, first on December 18, 2013 against Georgia State and again on February 27, 2016 against Utah State.

Pacific (2-1) led 86-79 with 3:25 to play, when Ramos hit a jumper to cut the lead to five. Eighteen seconds later, Rachol West drilled at three from the top of the arc to make it a two-point game and Ramos drained another trey with 2:21 left in regulation to give the Spartans an 87-86 lead.

After a layup by the Tigers' Desire Finnie gave the lead back to Pacific, Ramos buried another three-ball with 1:38 to go putting SJSU up by two 90-88. The Tigers tied the game on a pair of free throws and the teams went to overtime.

Jasmine Smith scored four of her 19 points on two quick buckets to open the extra period giving the Spartans (0-3) their biggest lead of the night. She would go on to add a game-high 13 rebounds, but fouled out with 1:26 to play. After Smith's two buckets SJSU went cold, missing their next six shot attempts.

Pacific went on an 8-0 run forging a 98-94 lead with 16 second to go, but an intentional foul on UOP's Najah Queenland with 12 seconds to play put Ramos on the line for two shots. She calmly knocked both down and the Spartans retained possession.

With seven seconds left, Ramos got a good look on a jumper to tie it at 98-98, but missed and Pacific went on to win 99-96.

In addition to her 38 points, Ramos had eight assists and a steal. Paris Baird scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Andrea Kohlhaas and Hallie Gennett each sank a pair of threes and pulled down four and three rebounds, respectively.

For the game, SJSU hit 47 percent if its shots, 35-of-76, and made 15-of-31 three-pointers for 48 percent.

Pacific was equally good from the field, hitting on 46 percent of its shots (40-of-88) and won the battle on the boards 51-to-44. Chelsea Lidy's 18 points paced Pacific. GeAnna Luaula-Summers added 14 points and 10 assists.

The Spartans return to The Event Center to host Santa Clara at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
