STOCKTON, Calif. -- In the San José State men's water polo team's last game of the season, the Spartans couldn't fend off a feisty UC-Irvine squad in the Golden Coast Conference Tournament fifth place game on Saturday night, November 19.
The sixth-seeded Spartans and the third-seeded Anteaters traded leads in the second half of the game and overtime before UCI scored with just eight seconds left in the second overtime period to take the game, 14-13.
The Anteaters quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Bryant Joudrie power play goal and a Jack Trush goal to start the night off.
Spartan freshman standout Ben Hauschild quickly answered for the Spartans to pull a goal back. Hauschild got Anteater goalkeeper Matej Matijevic to bite on a ball fake before placing the ball to Matijevic's right and into the back of the cage.
Freshman Giacomo Lovatelli then evened the score at two with 3:52 left in the first quarter and the two teams traded scores until the Anteaters took a two goal lead on a Ryan Warde goal to make the score 6-4. UC Irvine took that lead into the half.
Trush opened the scoring in the second half at 5:46 with his fourth goal of the night. The goal made the score 7-4, the biggest lead of the night for either time.
The lead was brief however as Hauschild quickly answered with his second goal of the night.
The teams then traded goals again to make the score 8-6 with Ashley Castle firing the ball into the back of the cage for the Spartans.
A night after leading the Spartans in scoring against #7-Long Beach State, freshman Marc Weber scored to cut the lead to one, 8-7, at 2:41 in the third quarter on a breakaway for San José State.
Freshman Finn Pardon then took a pass from senior Tyler Jamieson in front of Matijevic and buried it to tie the game at eight.
After the Spartans defended a Anteater attack, Pardon marched right back down the pool and beat Matijevic again to give the Spartans the first lead of the game with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Anteaters answered with a power play goal from Ryan Warde and the third quarter ended with the teams locked at nine.
After an offensive minded third quarter, the game turned into a defensive battle in the fourth. UC Irvine took a 10-9 lead at xx on a xx goal before the Spartans answered with a Hauschild goal assisted by Davor Koret to even the score again.
The Anteaters took a 11-10 lead on a Jon Polos goal with 1:02 left in the game and things were looking dire for the Spartans before Ashley Castle buried a power play goal with just 2.8 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Marc Weber opened the scoring in overtime at 1:31 in the first overtime period but Jack Trush quickly answered with his fifth goal of the night 16 seconds later to tie the game at 12.
UCI took the lead on a Ryan Warde goal with three seconds left in the first overtime period to push the score to 13-12.
Lovatelli pulled the Spartans even with his second goal by way of a cross cage, post in shot at 1:02 in the second overtime period.
UCI put a dagger in the Spartans with a lob shot goal by Ryan Warde, his fourth on the night, with just eight seconds left in the second overtime period.
