Defense Keys Victory Over Santa Clara

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team forced 21 turnovers and turned them into 19 points en route to its first victory of the year, a 75-64 defeat of the Santa Clara Broncos on Sunday afternoon in The Event Center.

The smaller Spartans were active on defense, pressing and switching up defenses to, for the most part, deny the Broncos the ball where they wanted it…in the lane.

It wasn't all defense though. Senior point guard Dezz Ramos continued her hot shooting pouring in 30 points after tying an Event Center scoring record two nights ago with 38 against Pacific. Ramos was 10-for-20 on the night and made all 10 of her free throw attempts, including six straight down the stretch when the Spartans put the game away. She added nine assists to her stat line while turning the ball over just three times.

Paris Baird scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds and, along with Myzhanique Ladd, led the team with four steals. Ladd scored four points, but ripped down eight rebounds and had three assists. Jasmine Smith also had eight boards and with nine points, passed the 900 career-point plateau. She now was 905 career points and could become the 16th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone later this season.

In the first quarter, using its size advantage across the front line, Santa Clara (1-2) worked the ball inside and shot 43 percent from the floor. Morgan McGwire, a 6-2 post, scored nine of her team-high 22 points in the period, but SJSU forced the Broncos into nine miscues and converted them into seven points.

Down 13-10 with two minutes to go, Taylor Turney sank two free throws to cut the lead to a single point. The Spartans forced three turnovers in the final 1:45 and a Ramos jumper with seven seconds left put San José State up 14-13 as the horn sounded.

The Spartans (1-3) hit the first six points of the second quarter, on a pair of Ramos jumpers and a Baird layup, to push its advantage to 20-13. Santa Clara fought back with a 10-2 run midway through the period to tie it at 25-25, but a pair of Ramos free throws and a three-pointer by Andrea Kohlhaas, one of two she had in the game, sent the teams to the locker room with SJSU up 30-25.

Coming out of the half, the Broncos scored nine straight points, seven from McGwire, and took their largest lead of the game 34-30 with 7:31 to go in the period. Ramos hit a jumper and Rachol West, who scored nine of her 13 points in the quarter, sank a three to give the lead back to SJSU. West drained another three with 2:16 left in the third to put San José State ahead for good.

The Spartans pushed the lead to double digits on a Hallie Gennett three-pointer with 6:30 to play, but with just under two minutes left, Santa Clara had trimmed the margin to five, 67-62. The Spartans took just one more shot on the night, a missed layup, but went 8-for-8 from the line to secure its first victory of the season.

San José State had its best game from the free throw line, making 19-of-23 for 83 percent. They were beaten on the boards, 47-to-39, but were outscored by just five in second-chance points.

The Spartans travel to Hawai'i for their next three games. The team will compete in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown from November 25-27. In successive days SJSU will face host Hawai'i, Oregon and #10 Mississippi.
