San José, Calif.- Giulia Gávio closed out the 2016 season with her eighth double-double of the season, but the San José State volleyball team fell to Fresno State, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 30-28, 25-19) Tuesday night in a Mountain West match at Spartan Gym.

Gávio led the Spartans with 19 kills and added 12 digs. She added two service aces and two block assists. Summer Avery was the only other Spartans in double-digit kills with 12, hit .360 for the night (12-3-25) and had three block assists.

Thaliana Grajeda led the Spartans in blocking with five, one solo and four assists. She hit .389 in the match with eight kills on 18 attempts and only one error. Nandyala Gama added four block assists and five kills. Latahevai Lousi recorded nine kills and three blocks.

Senior Julie Sam made her final appearance in a San José State uniform inside Spartan Gym. She played in two sets and recorded a dig. Sam was a two-year player for the Spartans and excels in the classroom as she is a Mountain West Scholar Athlete, San José State President's Scholar, Academic All-Mountain West honoree and an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

The two teams battled in the first set with 12 tied scores and five lead changes. The Spartans took a 23-22 lead on a Gávio kill and eventually won the set 25-23 on a Bulldog serving error.

The two teams battled in the second set, tying at 18-18 before Fresno State used a 7-2 run to win the set 25-20.

The third set was a classic battle between the teams, reminiscent of the 46-44 battle the teams had during the 2001 season. Fresno State had maintained a lead from the first serve of the set and led 21-16 and 24-20. The Spartans kept battling and tied the set at 24-24 on a Bulldog hitting error. The Spartans had match point twice at 25-24 and 26-25 but could not put the match away as Fresno State won 30-28.

The final set was similar to the second set as the teams played close, but with the scored tied at 10-10, Fresno State opened up a lead and won the set 25-19 for the match win.

San José State finishes the 2016 season with a 12-18 overall record and a 5-13 MW mark.
