Honolulu, Hawai'i - Hallie Gennett scored a season-high 16 points and the San Jose State women's basketball team kept the game close for the first 20 minutes, but the Spartans were outscored in the second half by 21 points in a 91-62 defeat on Sunday afternoon in both team's final game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
"We got to play a lot of people for a lot of minutes and I think collectively our group is getting better," head coach Jamie Craighead said. "I scheduled this year really tough and we didn't expect to be 6-0 at this point, but we are getting better and that is what's really important.
"We're preaching that this is a process. It's about where we are when we begin conference play and how we finish the year, not where we start. Obviously, we may have to play three games in as many days in the Mountain West Tournament, so this weekend has been a good primer for the effort that will take."
Gennett, who grabbed a team-high five rebounds, was one of three SJSU players in double figures. Rachol West, who had four rebounds, and Dezz Ramos, who led the team with three assists, joined her with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Spartans (2-4) trailed 5-2 after four minutes, when West tied the game with the first of two three-pointers she hit on the day. A minute later Paris Baird hit another to give San José State what would turn out to be its largest lead of the game, 8-5 midway through the period.
Oregon (5-1) took off won a 12-0 run over the next two and one half minutes, which Jasmine Smith ended with a layup. The Spartans scored five of the final seven points in the quarter and trailed 19-15 after 10 minutes.
The teams traded buckets for the first three and a half minutes of the second quarter with Oregon building a 25-19 lead. Gennett then drained a three and on the next possession did it again to tie it at 25-25. The game was tied again at 28-28 and a Smith three-point play gave SJSU a 31-30 lead with four minutes left before the intermission, but Oregon ended the quarter on a 13-to-4 run and took a 43-35 advantage into the locker rooms.
The teams returned to the floor after halftime and Oregon, with eight players at 6'1" or taller, forced its will on the smaller SJSU players. They outscored the Spartans 15-2 in the first five minutes and 25-11 by the end of the period. The Ducks had a 10-2 advantage in points in the paint and 5-0 in points off turnovers. They hit 53 percent of their shots to San Jose State's 18 percent.
"The third quarter really did us in," Craighead said. "We have to get tougher and grow from this, but the bigger, faster, stronger kids kind of wore us out in the second half. It was the same story as in (yesterday's) game against Mississippi State."
In the fourth period, Oregon continued to pound the ball inside to the tune of a 16-2 advantage in the paint and 8-2 in second-chance points leading to the final score of 91-62.
Baird scored seven points, grabbed four boards, and had an assist, a block and a steal for the Spartans. Smith finished with nine points. Andrea Kohlhaas and Taylor Turney scored five and four points, respectively. Alexis Harris didn't get into the scoring column, but grabbed a season-best three rebounds.
Sabrina Ionescu led the Oregon attack with a triple-double. She totaled 11 points, 11 assists and 12 rebounds. Lexi Bando was the games leading scorer with 19. Mallory McGwire and Oti Gildon had 11 and 16 points, respectively.
San José State returns home for its next game, December 3. They host the Saint Mary's Gaels in The Event Center with the tipoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
