LONG BEACH, Calif.
- San José State men's water polo played strong but lost to #7-Long Beach State, 13-7, in a Golden Coast Conference matchup on Friday night, November 4 in Long Beach, Calif.

Long Beach State scored three straight goals to start the night but the Spartans (7-16, 0-4) were able to keep the 49ers (12-8, 2-2) within their sights courtesy of a Marc Weber goal with eight seconds left in the first quarter to make it 3-1.

After Long Beach State scored a goal to start off the second quarter, freshman Finn Pardon quickly made it 4-2 with his team high 29th goal of the season.

After Pardon's goal however, Long Beach State all but put the game away. LBSU went on a 4-0 scoring run starting on a Duncan Lynde goal at 5:38 in the second quarter and the run would last almost exactly a full quarter. Zachary Scudder ended the run with a 5:39 third quarter goal in his first game back in almost a month.

"The guys battled hard but our energy doesn't make up for our mistakes," said SJSU head coach Bruce Watson.

The Spartans were able to put together a nice second half, scoring five goals, but weren't able to recover.

"We had difficulty scoring our power play and our inexperience shows up at key times," said Watson. "(The team) is finding out what they don't know, it's all part of the learning process."

Offensive power plays were once again a problem for San José State, who went 2-9 in 6-on-5 situations on the night. In their last three losses, the Spartans have only scored on five of their 34 power plays.

Freshman Ben Hauschild continued his solid play, notching a steal and a goal for the Spartans. With the steal, Hauschild now has 46 steals this season, third most in the nation.

The Spartans return to the pool tomorrow, Saturday, November 5, to take on the top-ranked team in the nation, unbeaten UCLA, at 3:00 p.m. Follow along with live stats here.
