Fayetteville, Ark.----- San Jose State University football wide receiver Tim Crawley is one of 52 candidates for the Burlsworth Trophy awarded to the "…most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on and shown outstanding performance on the field."
A fifth-year senior from Santa Clara, Calif., Crawley joined the Spartan football program in 2012 as a non-scholarship prospect from nearby Bellarmine Preparatory School. After redshirting the season, he was placed on scholarship by head coach Ron Caragher.
Since the 2013 season, Crawley contributions are numerous and varied. Primarily a wide receiver, he also played running back and served as a kickoff and punt returner. Prior to the November 4 game at Boise State, he ranks tenth on the San Jose State career receiving list with 130 pass receptions.
This season, Crawley leads the team with 34 pass receptions for 389 yards and two touchdowns. He shares the team lead with four total touchdowns after rushing for a 12-yard score in the October 29, 30-24 victory over UNLV. His 7.1 yards per carry average is best on the team.
Now in its seventh year, the Burlsworth Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, a former University of Arkansas walk-on that went on to earn All-America football honors. Three finalists will be presented and the 2016 award winner announced at the December 5 award ceremony in Springdale, Ark.
Former San Jose State offensive tackle David Quessenberry, now with the Houston Texans, was a finalist for the 2012 Burlsworth Trophy.
Also this week, Crawley was named a National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete award winner, a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy awarded to the "…nation's best student-athlete" and was selected as a CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) All-District VIII honoree.
