LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
San José State men's water polo had upset on their minds in the first half on Saturday, November 5, but #1-UCLA didn't allow a Spartans goal in the second half and won 10-3.

"The guys played pretty well and weren't intimidated," said SJSU head coach Bruce Watson. "(Goalie) Conrad Gordon did a great job and made some excellent stops which really helped the guys' energy."

The Bruins (23-0), who haven't lost since November 22, 2014, couldn't shake Gordon, who notched a career-high 14 saves, and the young Spartans (7-17) early on during Saturday's game.

UCLA took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter but freshman Ben Hauschild made it 3-2 at 4:32 in the second quarter. UCLA pulled one back before Hauschild once again made it a one-goal game, 4-3, with 1:14 left in the first half. That goal would be SJSU's last of the game.

The Bruins took control of the game after the halftime break. Although San José State won the opening sprint of the second half, Ryder Roberts of UCLA quickly scored two consecutive goals in the beginning of the third period to give the Bruins a 6-3 lead. Roberts' goals were the start of a 6-0 UCLA run that effectively put the Spartans away.

"Our youth caught up with us later in the game," said Watson. "This was a great learning experience and it's why we scheduled this trip."

Although the Spartans outscored the top-ranked team in the nation in the second quarter, 2-1, the third quarter, in which UCLA outscored SJSU, 5-0, was the turning point of the match.

San José State returns to action for their last match of their southern California trip, tomorrow, Sunday, November 6, at USC at 1:00 p.m.
