San Jose, Calif. --- Ryan Welage scored a game-high 22 points and the San José State men's basketball team beat Cal State East Bay, 96-80, in an exhibition game at The Event Center.Five Spartans finished in double-figure scoring in the team's final tuneup before the Nov. 12 regular season opener. Welage hit 4-of-8 from downtown and added five rebounds, an assist and a block in 25 minutes of action.Jaycee Hillsman scored nine straight points in less than two minutes during the first half. His burst helped turn a 10-point lead at the 7:35 mark into a 20-point lead by the end of the first period. The sophomore ended the game with 16 points.San José State finished the game 27-of-52 (.519) shooting, while holding the Pioneers to 28-of-69 (.406). It was also a good shooting night at the free throw line where SJSU made 36-of-40. Terrell Brown hit 9-of-10 attempts from the stripe on the way to 11 points.Isaac Thornton with 16 points, and Brandon Clarke with 11, rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Spartans.Cal State East Bay hit eight 3-pointers in the second half, but Welage and company never let the double-digit lead slip. SJSU led by as many as 25 points.San José State begins the regular season on Saturday, November 12, in The Event Center at 2:00 p.m. (PT) against West Coast Baptist.
