Nov. 9, 2016

WAC Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State men's soccer player Jonathan Colunga was named Second Team All-Western Athletic Conference, the conference office announced on Wednesday, November 9.

The all-conference selection is based on a player's performance in the 10-game conference schedule and selected by the 11 conference head coaches.

For Colunga, a senior midfielder from Lindsay, Calif., this marks the third time following a season he has been honored by the conference. In 2014 and 2015, he received second-team and first-team recognitions, respectively.

Colunga is the fourth Spartan to be named to three or more all-conference teams since 1993, joining four-time honoree Johnny Gonzalez (2002-5, MPSF), three-time honorees Hiroki Akiyama (2006-8, MPSF) and teammate, Rory Knibbs (2013-15, WAC).

In 2016, Colunga played in all 10 WAC matches, scoring a goal and assisting on another. For his career, Colunga has tallied 11 assists in conference play, tied for second most in WAC history.

Grand Canyon's Niki Jackson was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Year while Seattle University's Kyle Bjornethun repeated as WAC Defensive Player of the Year. UNLV's Timo Mehlich was named WAC Freshman of the Year and Utah Valley head coach Grag Maas was named WAC Coach of the Year.
