Dec. 11, 2016

Final Stats

Vermillion, S.D. - A 20-5 run to end the second quarter, was the difference as the San José State women's basketball team lost to the University of South Dakota Coyotes 84-69 on Sunday afternoon.

"We gave up another big run after the media timeout in the second and that cost us," head coach Jamie Craighead said. "We are out of rhythm as as team and we have to get that corrected. Chemistry on the court will be critical for us in Mountain West play."

The Spartans (2-9) trailed 29-23 with 6:02 to play before the half, but saw South Dakota (8-2) go 8-of-11 from the field and knock down two free throws down the stretch. While that was happening, SJSU was 2-of-5 from the field, but turned the ball over four times and missed both its free throw attempts. By the time the horn blew for halftime, San José State found itself down 49-28.

With 13 points each, Paris Baird and Dezz Ramos led SJSU in the scoring column. In addition, Baird added six rebounds and Ramos dished out a game-high eight assists. Jasmine Smith grabbed a game-highs eight rebounds and had three steals. Smith scored 11 points, has 968 for her career and is 32 points from becoming the 16th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.

Rachol West scored eight points, Hallie Gennett added five and Andrea Kohlhaas, Fieme'a Hafoka, Alexis Harris and Taylor Turney each chipped in with four. Turney also had three assists.

The Spartans led 9-7 with four minutes to play in the first quarter, but a 6-0 South Dakota run gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Myzhanique Ladd hit a three, her only bucket of the game, inside of two minutes to go in the period to reduce the lead to 15-14, but the Coyotes outscored SJSU 6-1 before the buzzer sounded and led 21-15 after the first period.

South Dakota out scored San José State 28-13 in the second period, including the 20-5 run in the final six minutes to push its advantage to 21-points at the break.

The Coyotes lead was 23 points, 67-44, heading to the final period and expanded to 29, 74-45, with 8:29 to play.

The Spartans continued to battle and trimmed the margin to 15 points by the time the final buzzer sounded. In the 22-10 run to end the game, West had six points on back-to-back threes, and Gennett scored five points.

The Coyotes had five players in double figures led by Allison Arens' 26 points. Ciara Duffy added 13 points, six assists and eight rebounds.

Both teams shot well from the field. The each made nine three-pointers and overall SJSU was 25-of-60 (42 percent) and South Dakota was 30-of-62 (48 percent). The Coyotes outrebounded the Spartans 40-28 and held a 38-26 advantage in the points in the paint.

"It's been a long, tough preseason," Craighead added. "We need to turn our attention to finals next week and get ready to close out the preseason at home."

San José State takes a six-day break from competition before wrapping up its non-conference slate with a game against Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday, December 18 in The Event Center. Tipoff in scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
