Dezz Ramos' Career-High 40 Points Lead SJSU To 107-84 Win Over Nevada

Dec. 29, 2016

San Jose, Calif. - Dezz Ramos scored a career-high 40 points and Jasmine Smith surpassed the 1,000 career-point plateau as the San José State women's basketball team defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack 107-84 on Thursday night in The Event Center, in each team's Mountain West opener.

Leading 56-48 at the half, the Spartans (4-9, 1-0 MW) opened the third quarter with a four-minute, 19-to-3 run, that started with five straight three-pointers. Ramos hit three of her career-best six three pointers in the run. She finished the game shooting 14-of-24 from the field, 6-of-11 from long range and made all six of her free throw attempts. In addition, the West Valley, Utah native led the game with five steals and dished out eight assists with just two turnovers.

Ramos now owns the top two scoring marks in the conference this year. She surpassed her previous career high, 38 points, which she set in the team's game against Pacific in November. She's now scored at least 30 points in three games this season, tying Hulett Brooks, for the most by a Spartans in a single season. She also joins Brooks as the only Spartans to score 40 or more points in a game and finished one point shy of the programs single-game scoring record of 41, which Brooks set against Sacramento State on December 10, 1993.

Smith, who finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, racked up her second double double in as many games. With a three-point play late in the first quarter, she became the 15th player in program history to reach the 1,000-career point milestone and now sits at 1,011-career points. With 10 boards she moves to within 25 rebounds of becoming the fifth player in SJSU women's basketball history with at least 1,000 points and 700 rebounds.

Myzhanique Ladd and Hallie Gennett were also in double figures in the scoring column. Ladd had 14 points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds. Gennett also had a career-high in rebounds with nine and added 12 points.

San José State's 107 points are the most scored in a Mountain West women's basketball game this season and equals the single-game record in conference play.

SJSU won the battle on the boards with a season-best 48 rebounds. Nevada (6-6, 0-1 MW), which grabbed 46 rebounds, was led by Terae Briggs' game-high 14. The Spartans also out shot the Wolf Pack 47-to-34 percent, including 47-to-38 percent from beyond the three-point line.

San José State used pressure defense to create 16 Nevada turnovers, including 13 steals, and converted those miscues into 25 points, including 20 fast-break points.

Coming off the bench, Halie Bergman was the Wolf Pack's leading scorer with a career-high 21 points. With 16 points, starting guard Stephanie Schmid was Nevada's only other double-figure scorer. The Wolf Pack's starting five made just 12-of-46 field goal tries.

The Spartans return to action on January 4 in Fort Collins, Colorado. San Jose State plays Colorado State in Moby Arena at 7:00 p.m. (MT). Fans can follow the action on the Spartan Digital Network or through Live Stats, both of which are available through the team's schedule page at www.sjsuspartans.com.
