San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team endured a clinic on interior scoring as the Saint Mary's Gaels shot 60 percent for the game and scored 26 of their 28 two-point buckets in the paint in an 85-64 loss for the Spartans on Saturday afternoon.
Saint Mary's shot 72 percent in the first quarter, hitting 12-of-13 shots in the lane and in successive quarters connected on 69 percent, 43 percent and 54 percent. Megan McKay, who sank 9-of-11 shots for a game high 21 points led, the Gaels attack. Sydney Raggio had 12 points on 6-for-6 shooting and 12 rebounds.
The Spartans shot 30 percent for the game (24-of-79) and launched a program-record 43 three-pointers, but sank just 11. They broke the previous record of 42, which was set at San Diego State on January 22, 2014. In addition, the SJSU women's basketball, Event Center mark of 38 threes, ironically set against San Diego State in February of 2014 was also eclipsed and the 43 treys ties Fresno State's total from a February, 2012.
Dezz Ramos and Hallie Gennett were in double figures for SJSU with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Andrea Kohlhass equaled her career-best scoring night with 9 points and freshman Fieme'a Hafoka added one bucket, the first of her collegiate career.
The Gaels held a 49-to-24 advantage on the boards, including 39 defensive rebounds, holding the Spartans to one shot on nearly half its possessions. Saint Mary's outscored the Spartans 52-to-18 in the paint and turned 10 SJSU turnovers into 20 points.
SJSU goes on the road for its next game. The team travels up the peninsula to play the San Francisco Dons in Kezar Pavilion. Tipoff on Tuesday night is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
