San Francisco, Calif. - Trailing by 19 points to the Unitveristy of San Francisco entering the fourth quarter, the San Jose State women's basketball team put on a furious comeback, cut the lead to five points with a minute to play, but couldn't get over the hump in a 79-71 loss on Tuesday night in Kezar Pavilion.
Down 60-41 to start the final period, San Jose State went on an 7-0 run capped by a Dezz Ramos jumper with 7:37 to play to make it a 12-point game. With 5:09 to play, Myzhanique Ladd got a hoop and the harm, and converted the three-point play to get the lead down to single digits, 66-57.
After a Dons layup, Paris Baird drained a three-pointer and with 1:09 left on the clock hit another to make it a five-point game, 74-69. With no timeouts left the Spartans were forced to foul. USF made 3-of-4 from the line in the final minute to secure the eight-point victory.
Ramos led Spartans offense with a game-high 28 points. She was 11-of-23 from the floor, 6-of-7 from the line, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists. Ladd added a season-high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jasmine Smith chipped in 10 points, had four rebounds and two steals, and Baird led the team with six boards and scored nine points.
However, in an all to familiar scenario, the Spartans (2-7) struggled out of the gate. The teams were tied 2-2 after a minute and a half, when SJSU went ice cold on both ends. They didn't score for over six minutes, missed seven consecutive shots and turned the ball over four times.
While that was going on, the Dons (5-4) were building an 11-point lead, chiefly off the offensive glass. They grabbed 10 offensive boards and turned them into 10 second-chance points to lead 20-9 after one quarter. For the game USF outrebounded San Jose State 42-to-34 including 21-to-13 on the offensive end. They scored 21 second-chance points for the game, compared to ten for the Spartans.
An Anna Seilund three-pointer a minute and a half in the second quarter pushed the San Francisco lead to 25-9, but the Spartans chipped away. With six minuets to go before the half, a Ramos jumper capped a 9-2 run making it 27-18. The Spartans would still be down by nine with 4:21 to go, but USF closed the quarter on an 11-2 spurt and led 42-24 going to the locker rooms.
Seilund's 22 points led USF, which maintained its double-digit lead throughout the third quarter. Rachel Howard, Claudia Price and Michaela Rakova scored 13, 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The final two games of this three game road-trip are coming up on Friday and Sunday, when the Spartans play at the University of Nebraska and the University of South Dakota.
