Berkeley, Calif.--The San José State bars team recorded the sixth-best team score in school history as the Spartan women's gymnastics team continued its upward progression with a season-best 193.875 team score Saturday night at Haas Pavilion. California won the meet with a 196.300, followed by Washington at 195.325.
Saving the best for last, San José State finished the meet on the bars with a 49.025, tying for the sixth-best score in school history. Haleigh Shepard started off the rotation with a 9.675, followed Kaprece Nadonza with a career-best 9.800 and Kendal Watts with a career-best 9.750. Stephanie Relova, Rachel Heinl and Kaitlin Won each scored a 9.825 to round out the Spartan scoring.
The Spartans were just .300 off of the bars school record of 49.325 set at the 2007 Mountain Pacific Sports Championships inside Spartan Gym.
Won finished the night with her best all-around score since her freshman season at 39.075. Her best score was her 9.825 on bars, followed by a 9.800 on floor and a 9.725 on vault and bars.
Taylor Chan, the MPSF Freshman of the Week, had three strong performances for the Spartans. She led the floor team with a season-high 9.850 to tie for third place and added a 9.725 on vault and a season-best 9.700 on beam.
The Spartans started the meet on beam where the team scored a season-high 47.500 and had to count a fall. Won led the team at 9.725, followed by Chan at 9.700, Josalyn Ray at 9.575 and Madison Loomis at 9.500. Relova had a 9.000, while Chelsey Andrada had an 8.850.
San José State rotated to floor and scored a season-best 48.825. Chan led the team with her season-best 9.850, followed by Won at 9.800, Ellie Pascoe-Long at 9.775, Andrada and Ray at 9.700 and Erica Matos at 9.540.
The vault team then scored a 48.525 prior to the bars rotation. Chan and Won again led the team with a 9.725, then Heinl and Shepard at 9.700, and Matos and Ray at 9.675.
Next week, San José State competes at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, January 28, beginning at 6:45 p.m. CST.
