Boca Raton, Fla.----- Senior Marine Dans of San Jose State University defeated Florida Atlantic University freshman Naiya Oden, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-4), in the clinching singles match giving the Spartans a 4-3 non-conference win in their season-opening dual match.
Dans was the only player for San Jose State (1-0) to pick up wins in singles and doubles. She teamed with senior Gaelle Rey for a 6-2 win over Oden and Kaitlyn Walker at #2-doubles before her victory at #5-singles.
With the Spartans trailing, 1-0, after winning just one of three doubles match, San Jose State won the first three singles matches. Miyo Kobayashi, playing #6-singles, and Sybille Gauvain at #1-singles won straight set matches, for a 2-1 lead in the best of seven points team scoring. Gauvain began the day ranked #96th nationally ranked in singles.
Senior Marie Klocker added to the San Jose State lead with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 win over Ana Gutierrez at #2-singles.
After freshman Tamara Culibrk lost a three-set match to Florida Atlantic's Lyndsey Boos, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, Dans won a pair of tiebreakers for the straight-set victory and the team win.
"It was good to see the team regain focus in singles. To say we started slow in doubles is an understatement," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka.
"Marine played a great second-set tiebreaker to clinch the match today. It was a vocal crowd at Florida Atlantic and to come out with a win is a good start (to the season).
San Jose State concludes its Florida trip with a January 23 dual match at FIU (Florida International). Doubles play begins at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
