Community College All-Americans Among First 2017 San Jose State Football Signees

Jan. 27, 2017

Offensive lineman Jake Colman from Ventura College and Fullerton College linebacker Justin Parcells, a pair of California Community College All-Americans, are among four transfers to sign a National Letter-of-Intent and enroll at San Jose State University for the 2017 spring semester. New head coach Brent Brennan made the announcement.

Linebackers Jamal Scott, a Region III all-state selection and teammate of Parcells, and Brando Phillips from Butte College round out San Jose State's first signees.

"We knew we needed some players that could fill needs in our defensive front. We were looking for players that played hard and loved football," says the San Jose State head coach about the newest Spartans who can participate in the team's spring practice that begins March 7.

"We're really pleased they're here, enrolled in school and can be with us in spring practice. We're looking forward to seeing them as Spartans."

Colman (6-3, 310, JR) played guard and tackle during his two seasons at Ventura. The Ventura, Calif., native was a two-time All-Channel League selection offensive tackle at Buena High.

Parcells (5-11, 215, SO) played only one season of community college football and has three seasons available to him at San Jose State. He was the Southern California Football Association's Defensive Player of the Year for the 2016 California Community College and national champion Fullerton team. Parcells led his team with 71 tackles and was credited with 11.0 tackles for loss and 7.5 quarterback sacks. The two-sport letterwinner at Servite High in Anaheim was an all-league linebacker and was on the wrestling team as a sophomore.

Scott (6-2, 230, JR) also was a big part of Fullerton's defense last season. He was in on 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 quarterback sacks and was credited with 49 tackles. Ranked as the #90 athlete nationally coming out of Magnolia High in Anaheim, Scott was a member of the Arizona State University football program in 2014 and 2015.

Phillips (6-3, 240, JR) comes to San Jose State as a first-team All-NorCal League defensive lineman. He was among the top-10 players in the conference with his 10.0 tackles for loss and his 4.0 quarterback sacks last season. At West Ranch High in Valencia, Calif., he led his team with 20.0 tackles for loss and 14.5 quarterback sacks playing just eight games.

The remainder of San Jose State's football signing class for 2017 will be announced starting Wednesday, February 1.
