Fort Worth, Texas- Taylor Chan, Erica Matos and Kaitlin Won were the top-three floor finishers Saturday evening as the San José State women's gymnastics team competed at the Metroplex Challenge at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The Spartans finished the meet with a 193.650 team score.
Chan tied her career high with a 9.850 on floor to win the event at the four-team meet. This is her first collegiate floor title and second event title victory after tying for first on the vault at Sacramento State. Matos and Won each scored a season-high 9.825 to tie for second place on floor.
The trio also led the floor team to a season-high 49.050, tying for the 13th-best floor score in school history. Also contributing on the floor included Chelsey Andrada with a season-best 9.775, Ellie Pascoe-Long at 9.775 and Josalyn Ray with a season-best 9.750.
The vault team also had a good night with a 48.750, and tied for the 14th-best score in San José State history. Ray and Chan led the team at 9.775, followed by won at 9.750, Haleigh Shepard at 9.725, Matos at 9.725 and Rachel Heinl at 9.525.
Heinl again led the Spartan bars team with a 9.825, as she scored a 9.800 or better in every meet this season. Won scored a 9.800 for the second time this season, followed by Kaprece Nadonza at 9.725, Shepard at 9.700, Stephanie Relova at 9.100 and Kendal Watts at 9.075.
The Spartan beam team continued its improvement with a season-high 47.700. Andrada led the team with a 9.725, followed by Ray with a season-high 9.700. Madison Loomis and Relova each had a 9.550, followed by Won and Chan at 9.175.
The Spartans finished the meet in third place, as George Washington won the meet with a 196.150, followed by Central Michigan at 194.125. Bowling Green was fourth at 193.550.
San José State opens the home portion of the 2017 schedule next Friday, February 3, as the team hosts UC Davis at The Event Center beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or by calling the Spartan Ticket Office at (408) 924-SJTX (7589).
