La Jolla, Calif. -- San Jose State University's women's swimming and diving team finished third in a four-way meet with Rice, San Diego State and host UC San Diego.

Rice came in first with a score of 673.5 with San Diego State close behind at 637.5 points. San Jose State scored 565 and UC San Diego finished in fourth place with a score of 526.

Coach Sage Hopkins said, "All three of these programs are really strong, Rice has one of the better teams that they have had in years and San Diego State is clearly one of the top couple of teams in our conference and UC San Diego is one of the top D-II programs in the country.

"So, it was a great opportunity to compete against some really top-notch competition. That is really what we're looking for at this point in the season as we approach the conference championships."

For the second day in a row, Cari Reiswig finished first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 318.55. She also placed second in the 1-meter event with a score of 288.70.

"I was very happy with the divers' performances," said the Spartans head coach. "Natasha Sondeno is inching closer and closer to getting her NCAA Zone qualifying mark and that's great to see." Sondeno came in fourth with a score of 276.20 in the 3-meter dive and eighth with a score of 241.15 in the 1-meter dive.

The Spartans had a third-place finisher in six out of 14 swimming events.

Colleen Humel had two of them with times of 57.89 in the 100 back and 2:03.33 in the 200 back. Taylor Solorio swam 52.75 in the 100 free and Violani Auva'a posted a time of 57.39 in the 100 fly.

The other two third place finishes were in the 200 medley relay team with Humel, Jenner Johnson, Brenna Bushey and Solorio with a time of 1:45.85 and also the 400 free relay team of Antoinette Loya, Solorio, Brittany Heng and Gabby Heng with a time of 3:32.51.

"I was very pleased with our medley relays, that was a great start to the meet," said Hopkins.

"We have always have a goal of being better competitively each day and I really feel that we hit that goal and I'm really happy with how the swimmers and divers performed today."

San Jose State is next in action, Friday, January 13, in a dual meet with Cal State East Bay. First event is at 1:00 p.m.
