Jan. 7, 2017

Final Stats

Fresno, Calif. -- The San Jose State women's basketball team led the Fresno State Bulldogs 41-37 after 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs opened the third period with a 16-0 run over four minutes and never looked back in an 88-74 win in Mountain West play on Saturday in the Save Mart Center.

With 16 points and 14 rebounds senior Jasmine Smith led the Spartans (4-11, 1-2 MW). It is Smith's fifth double double of the year and fourth in as many games and with the rebound total she moved past 700 for her career. She joins Elinor Banks, Lamisha Augstine, Rhoda Chew and Riana Byrd as the only players in Spartans history to have scored 1,000 points and grabbed 700 rebounds. In addition, Smith moved past Byrd into 13th place on the career-scoring list. She now has 1,045 points and 704 rebounds.

Dezz Ramos was the only other Spartan in double figures finishing with 12 points, but was just 3-of-19 from the floor, including 1-of-10 from three-point range. Taylor Turney equaled her season-best with nine points and dished out a game-high and personal-best seven assists.

The Spartans shot 52 percent (10-of-19) in the first quarter including hitting four three-pointers and led 21-12 on a Turney jumper with 3:56 to play, but the team would hit just one more bucket in the period, a Turney three, while Fresno State clawed back into it closing the gap to 24-20 by the end of the quarter.

SJSU opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run, capped by a Smith layup for its largest lead of the game, 12 points, 32-20. But just as in the first period, the Bulldogs battled to get the lead down to single digits and San Jose State took a four point, 41-37 lead into the half.

San Jose State shot 43 percent in the first half (16-of-37) and 44 percent (8-of-18) from beyond the arc, but struggled in the second half going 10-of-35 (28 percent) and 1-of-15 from three point range.

Fresno State (9-6, 2-2 MW) had four players in double figures. Bego Faz Davalos led the Bulldogs with 20 points and 19 rebounds and had four points in the run, which put the game away. Candice White scored seven of her 16 points in the run. Emille Volk led all scorers with 24 points and Tory Jacobs added 11 points.

SJSU returns to action on Wednesday against the San Diego State Aztecs in the Event Center. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
